Cringe-inducing stories of animal neglect and abuse are all too easy to trip across. There’s no need to detail any right now. This, instead, is the positive side of that spectrum–organizations that provide comfort and care for canines in the autumn of their lives.

Here’s some of our favorites…..

Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary: Located in Tennessee, this “Forever Foster” has more than  a million facebook followers and a plenty of updates about their guests.

Lily’s Legacy: This sanctuary focuses on large-breed canines that have been abandoned or neglected. Located in California’s Central Valley, the organization began in 2009 and is named for a 14-year-old golden retriever who died the previous year from health complications. The organization exists to “[provide] a place where many of the senior dogs who are lost, abandoned, or otherwise find themselves homeless, will have a safe haven in which to live out their days, or stay until a loving adoptive home is found, and where they will receive the love and care they so richly deserve.”

House With A Heart Senior Pet Sanctuary: This noble endeavor in Maryland serves both cats and dogs. Their website offers a wealth of biographies on their guests and videos on its youtube page. They also offer helpful information on how someone can start their own similar sanctuary.

Those are just three sites. There’s nearly 4 million pages connected to the “Senior Dog Sanctuary” google search. There’s plenty of good out there, it’s simply a matter of knowing where to look.

And consider making a donation to any of these organizations. We can all help a little bit.
